The house is fully modernised, with central heating and heated towel rails, plus real-flame gas fire in the lounge. Oven, hob, microwave. Dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer.
Back garden (currently under renovation and still a work in progress), free parking for one smallish car in driveway, also free parking on narrow road.
If you’re looking for a quaint flint cottage with winding stairs in the bustling town centre of Wells-Next-The-Sea, then this is not for you. If you’re looking for a calm space in a light, airy, modernised house, with free parking, a few minutes’ walk from the peaceful East Quay, fishing boats, and winding creeks, then you’re in the right place.
Curlew Retreat sits less than two minutes’ walk from the quay, and five minutes’ walk to the main shopping street, bars and restaurants. In a quiet side street away from the centre of town, the house has a spacious garden (currently a work in progress but there are some chairs and a little table) and one designated parking space for a small to medium-sized car, as well as free on-street parking, essential during the busy summer months.
There are separate lounge and open-plan kitchen/diner, and two bathrooms, including a downstairs shower for those summer shower-downs after a day on the beach or an early-morning run. It is fully centrally heated (although we hope you won’t need it), and there is also a real-flame gas fire for a cosy, hassle-free glow on chilly winter evenings.
Furnishing is simple and comfortable, and we hope you will feel at home here (no antiques to break). The two bedrooms are furnished with king-size (5ft) beds, and the bed in the second bedroom can be also configured into 2 x 2ft 6in single beds if required. The upstairs bathroom has bath and shower over, and both bathrooms have heated towel rails.
The kitchen has all you need, including dishwasher and small microwave, and the downstairs bathroom also houses a washing machine and dryer.
The beach at Wells-next-the-Sea has miles of sand backed by pine forest, and links with next-door Holkham Gap via a countryside pathway or via the beach itself. And those iconic beach huts, of course.
If you’re a walker, the Norfolk Coast Path is two minutes’ walk away, and the Peddar’s Way is also within easy reach, running inland through the Norfolk countryside from Holme-next-the-Sea.
If you’re a cyclist, we have a lockable shed with space for two adult bikes (no we don’t, it’s full of junk at the moment), ideal for exploring this wonderfully flat (well, gently undulating) landscape. For the more sporting among you entering the Norfolk Triathlon or the Holkham Half, there is also an aerial drier in the garden for wetsuits (no there isn’t, not yet).
If you love birds (as we do), then you’ll relish the diverse bird life on the marshes where you can see and hear the unmistakable bubbling call of the curlew for most of the year. In winter there are flocks of Brent geese, and avocets and little egrets in the spring and summer, as well as the squeaking of oystercatchers and redshanks year-round. This is all in and around Wells; in addition, there are numbers of reserves within easy reach, including one of the RSPB’s flagships at Titchwell with its visitor centre and modern enclosed lookout.
And if you just want to escape the hubbub of the city, Wells-next-the-Sea is remote and peaceful (most of the time) with a great mix of working fishing fleet, shops, galleries, cafes, pubs and restaurants, and traditional fish and chips and crabbing on the quay.
No worries about when you arrive as we have a lockbox, situated at the rear of the property, next to the back door. Guests will be emailed a code, allowing out of hours access. All parts of the house are accessible to guests apart from the under-eaves storage which is locked.
Sorry, we have no provision for dogs at this time.
Cost is as follows, per night, for the whole house . Minimum stay in low and medium seasons: 2 nights to cover running costs. Minimum stay at other times: 7 nights.

Changeover day for weekly bookings is Friday; for shorter breaks housekeeping can also take place on a Monday so you can stay Friday – Monday, Monday – Friday, or 2 or more nights within those days. With enhanced cleaning due to COVID, we would ask that you vacate by 9:30am, and do not arrive before 4pm to allow for cleaning and sanitising.
